2007 Tournament Results

In the end, there can be only one.

And this year, "the one" was not the Big Johnsons. But who says being runner up can't be any fun? The BJs played 4 SOLID kickball games - probably the best we've played all year. It really should have been enough, but it was just the other team's day.

Probably the biggest kudos have to go to Mark and Lindsay for making all those great catches in right field. The wind took about all the balls out their way, and they were grabbing them all. There were a couple balls that managed to buck the wind and make their way into left field and this gave Steve the chance to make a HUGE running, sliding catch. I think that catch got voted the best catch of the day.

All our infielders were having great days, too - Molly, Scott, Craig, Sarah, Michelle and Lori - you guys made the plays that kept us in there.

Offensively the BJs were wicked-tough. Great base running and huge HUGE rallies by a couple home runs from Craig and Dave's grand slam. Sure, that one was a couple inches foul, but hey - the umps didn't call it, so we'll take the 4 runs.

Speaking of umps - the BJs have to thank the McNally's team for hangin' out and rooting for us - and heckling the umps in our favor. Those guys were awesome - I mean, you gotta love a team that shows up to a kickball tournament with a 16 gallon keg!

So we finished 2nd in '06 and 2nd in '07 - not too shabby. Let's shoot for the championship in '08, though!

September 12th Game Summary

After a lot of heated discussions, the BJs decided to continue our strategy from last week. So we kept it a close game, 15-13...but ended-up letting Wulf's Team have the "W."

This was our last regular season game, so we finished with a 5-3 record. Our 3 in a row wins earned us a bye in the first round of the upcoming tournament, so that strategy worked out well. And we think our "losing" strategy the last 3 games will give us a HUGE psychological advantage in the tournament. Little do all the other teams know, we're the sleepers...the team to beat. Just like last year, baby...look out - 'cause the Big Johnson's are comin' for ya!

Speaking of the tournament - we'll see you all there around 9:30. Show up ready to play! Jesse and I will be there about 8:45 to ump the 9:00 game - some feel free to come early and help us out!

And don't forget Rockfest III Saturday evening! I can't think of a better way to celebrate our wins than loud, head-banging 80's metal!

Oh yeah - we'll be celebrating Michelle's birthday all day, too!

September 5th Game Summary

After our tough loss last week, we sat around cursing the McNally's team and started seriously discussing our strategy for the final weeks leading up to the tournament. After an exhausting round-table discussion involving numerous beers, we figured why not lose a couple games so we would be seeded better in the tournament next weekend.

So this week we kinda half-assed it out on the field. Of course we kept the score close (6-5)...didn't want the other team to think they could walk all over us, you know. In fact, we were pretty much forced to doctor the game sheets to show that they won.

Overall, it was a great morale booster knowing that we could have killed this team had we actually wanted to. You know...like not kicking pop-up to their strongest players...and maybe running instead of walking around the bases. I think we're all pumped for our final regular season game this coming week (Sept 12th) and for the end of the year tournament on the 15th.

Lookout Dunham White....the BJs will be on the hunt!

Oh yeah - after the BJs win the tournament, we'll be celebrating at Rockfest 3 featuring Ratt, Dokken and Great White. Bitchin! See you there!

August 29th Game Summary

It was a tough night for the BJs, thats for sure.

One of our key players was sick, another had clear vision in only one eye - we call that "pirate style" matey! ARRGGH.

Offensively we were the same powerhouse we are every week...defensively...well, thats a different story. We gave them A LOT of runs.

The final score was 22-19 (them, not us)...but those of you that were there know that with how we played in the field it should have been much worse. If we would have showed-up with even an "average" game, we would have 10-runned them after 4 innings.

But alas, we did not.

BJs are 5-1.

Next Game

The BJs take the field against McNally's August 29th at 6:15 on field 20.

Both teams are 5-0...which means one team will emerge 5-1, the other will tout a 6-0 record.

Let's go for the 6-0 BJs!

22-7

Yeah...that's right. 22-7. The BJs showed Just 4 Kicks that adult kickball in Sioux Falls, SD is not "just for kicks."

Sure...they were up on us 5-0 after the first inning. Sure it was a cold, rainy night. Sure we all showed up too late to have the mandatory pre-game 3 beers. But did we let all that adversity stop us? Hell, no. We're the BJs...and we dominate.

After letting Just 4 Kicks walk all over us for 3 innings, we decided to do something about it. We scored like....11 runs in the 6th inning to end the game. Its great being the home team. But since we're sporting folks, we decided to play another inning just for fun. Yeah, we kicked their asses that inning, too.

We have 3 players sharing the MVP this week
  1. Sarah for making 2 triples on bunts and racking-up countless RBIs
  2. Scott, team captain and Mr. BJ himself, for kicking a 3-run home run and
  3. Jesse for a spectacular flying catch to end the game
Mark also gets an honorable mention for several awesome kicks and touching home plate every time he got in.

1-2-3- Go BJs! 5-0.

August 15th Game Summary

The BJs continue to dominate, 10-running the Tru-Green Chemlawn team 18-8 in just 5 innings.

Unfortunately I was in Colorado for work all week, so I missed the game. But according to Steve-O who subbed for me, it was a pretty good time for the Johnsons.

Congrats to Mark for being voted MVP of the week for his 7 RBIs..and for inadvertently missing home pate as he was running past it celebrating. Way to go, man!

Here's a glimpse of what I was doing in Colorado...besides work:

Can you say "glider ride above the Rocky Mountains?" Awesome! More photos here.

See you Wednesday BJs!

August 8th Game Summary

DOMINATION....

Well, not really "domination" per se...but the BJs did "blow" one past the Rubber Balls 10-9.

The BJs were hardcore out of the gate, making the game 9-2 after the first couple of innings. Then we hit a slump that allowed the Rubber Balls to play a little catch-up.

Mark was voted MVP for his AWESOME diving catch to end the game. Good thing, too...'cause if they would have scored another one the BJs would have been in a tight spot goin' into the bottom of the last inning. Sometimes we're not so good under pressure!

Here's a few of the guys discussing post-game strategy.

Captain "Big Johnson" himself holding up last year's shirt.

Don't under-estimate the BJ ladies - they kick ass on and off the field!

August 1st Game Summary

One word describes the BJs last night - DOMINATION.

We played a team called Last Picked In Gym Class which, from the looks of them, was hardly the case. They had a great first week beating Tru-Green Chemlawn 26-2. After watching that slaughter, we were understandably a little concerned.

Anyway, those guys (and gals...it is a co-ed league) showed-up for the second week straight with nothing but water and gatorade. Not only that, they warmed-up by running laps, stretching and doing sprints. Don't they realize this is a "fun" league?

The BJs executed a rigorous warm-up routine consisting of drinking at least 2 beers each and poking fun at the other team. This routine served us well last year when we placed 2nd in our division...and the strategy certainly paid off last night as we pulled a 9-6 win out of our asses.

Sarah was voted MVP of the game for her rock-solid performance on 3rd base and particularly "weak" bunts.

One particular high-point was when their left fielder dissed one of our gal's bunts calling it "a weak bunt." "Is there another kind?" I thought to myself as I told their pitcher that ragging on a girl is an automatic walk. Too bad the ump didn't agree.

After 2 weeks the BJs are 2-0. Let's keep the train a movin'!

Hello?

Is this thing on?

Can you hear me now?
